Team USA finished off its experience at the 2013 IIHF World Championships in victorious fashion on Sunday afternoon.

The American side brought home the bronze medal, its first since 2004, as it defeated Finland 3-2 in a shootout in the third place game.

Sunday’s victory marked the sixth World Championship medal for the United States in its participating history in the tournament, and their sixth bronze.

Craig Smith and Paul Stastny each had goals in regulation for Team USA, while Alex Galchenyuk was credited with the game-winner in the skills competition.

Goaltender John Gibson made 36 saves on 38 shots against.

Lightning forward Nate Thompson and defenseman Matt Carle did not mark the score sheet, but played a key role in the faceoff circle and shutting down the opponent’s top lines.

The Americans got out to a fast start, going up by a pair of goals through the first 20 minutes.

After a scoreless second frame, Lauri Korpikoski scored twice in the third to tie the game and send it into extra time, where the Americans ultimately prevailed.
