Lightning (3-1-0, 6 Points) vs. Flyers (2-3-0, 4 Points)
TV/Radio: Sun Sports HD; AM 970 WFLA
This is the first of three meetings between the two clubs. Last season the Lightning were a perfect 2-0-0 against Philadelphia on home ice and outscored the Flyers 7-2. Steven Stamkos and Martin St. Louis also both tallied four points in four games against Philadelphia last season.
The Big Story:
Tampa Bay has posted wins in each of its past two games and looks to extend its winning streak to three, while also staying unbeaten on home ice this season. After a rocky 0-3-0 start to the season, the Flyers also have won each of their previous two contests, and look to reach the .500 mark for the first time this season.
LIGHTNING – Tampa Bay continues on its season-high five-game home stand tonight, and riding some momentum, as the Bolts have won two straight, including their most recent game that kicked off the home set Friday night at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. A back-and-forth high scoring affair was settled after the Lightning overcame a pair of two-goal deficits and scored three times in the final period to defeat the Ottawa Senators 6-4 in front of a sellout crowd, handing the opposition its first loss of the season at the same time. Ryan Malone scored twice, including the game-winner, and Steven Stamkos, Victor Hedman and Matt Carle scored before Tom Pyatt sealed the win with an empty-net tally. Anders Lindback won for the second time in three starts, turning aside 32 shots.
FLYERS – Philadelphia completes its two-game swing through Florida, as it plays in the second half of its back-to-back set. The road trip started off on the right foot Saturday night, as the Flyers exploded for seven goals in a victory against the Panthers. Matt Read registered his first career hat trick, while Wayne Simmonds, Ruslan Fedotenko, Luke Schenn and Tye McGinn also had goals for the Flyers. Things are starting to come around it seems for Philadelphia, which is beginning to gain steam after a dismal start. Injuries are partly to blame, but to compensate, the Flyers agreed to terms with forward Mike Knuble, who registered an assist in his first game back with the team on Saturday.
Tampa Bay’s Cory Conacher has recorded points in each of his first four career NHL games, while teammate Steven Stamkos is also riding a four-game point streak. For the Flyers, Matt Read has collected four points in his past two games.
LIGHTNING – Mattias Ohlund (Knees, Placed On Injured Reserve) and Matt Taormina (Upper Body, Placed on Injured Reserve). FLYERS – Chris Pronger (Placed On Injured Reserve), Scott Hartnell (Foot), Andrej Meszaros (Shoulder, Out One Month), Danny Briere (Wrist) and Zac Rinaldo (Leg).
Flyers defensemen Kurtis Foster, Bruno Gervais and Andrej Meszaros are all former members of the Lightning, as is forward Ruslan Fedotenko. Lightning defenseman Matt Carle spent each of the past four seasons with the Flyers before returning to the Bay Area this past summer.
“It’s definitely a great honor to be a part of this organization for so long, and today to have family and friends and everybody here in Tampa. It’s a great honor.” – Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier, after being honored Friday night for playing in 1,000 career games, all with Tampa Bay
