Nine games into the 2006-07 season, the Johnstown Chiefs stand at 4-5-0. A young team stocked with prospects from the Tampa Bay Lightning and Springfield Falcons, the Chiefs, while young and somewhat short on professional experience, are a highly talented team that will be competitive with the top teams in the ECHL this season.
Through the first nine games, the Chiefs have shown both a balanced scoring attack up front, with every forward on the roster recording a point, as well as an aggressively attacking group of defensemen, who led by third-year pro Doug Andress (3+5) and rookie P.J. Atherton (0+8), have recorded a total of 22 points (4+18).
Rookie forward Stanislav Lascek, who leads the ECHL in rookie scoring with 11 points (2+9), is joined on the rookie scoring leaders list by teammate Maxime Boisclair (3+7), who was his teammate last season with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Gus Katsuras, who was a two-time NCAA Division III All-America selection at Hamilton College, has recorded eight points (2+6) thus far, and Radek Smolenak scored four goals for Johnstown before being recalled to Springfield on November 2.
In net, Gerald Coleman earned his first win of the season against Wheeling on November 4, making 35 saves in the 5-2 win. Morgan Cey was in net for the teams other three victories, and currently holds a record of 3-2-0, with a goals-against average of 3.61 and a save percentage of .898.
