KOSHECHKIN IMPROVES TO 2-0 AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Lightning goaltending prospect Vasili Koshechkin improved his record to 2-0 at the 2007 IIHF World Championships with a thrilling 5-4 victory against Finland on Tuesday at Arena Khodynka in Moscow. Koshechkin made 21 saves for the win but not before Finland made it interesting in the final period with three goals.

Through two periods Koshechkin made 12 saves on 13 shots faced as Russia carried a 4-1 lead into the third. Russia dominated Finland in shots during the second period, firing 17 shots at Columbus’ Fredrik Norrena while only allowing six on Koshechkin.

Finland battled back in the third with the first two goals of the period, including one from Dallas’ Jere Lehtinen on the power play to pull the Fins to within one at 4-3. Russia jumped back to a two-goal lead on an even strength goal from Petr Schastlivyy to put the game out of reach. Petteri Nummelin scored a final goal for Finland on the power play but the Fins were never able to tie the score.

Through two games played Kosheckin has a 2-0 record with a .900 save-percentage and a 2.50 goals-against average.
