LIGHTNING BEGIN SCRIMMAGES, FIRST GAME ENDS 1-1

The Ice Sports Forum in Brandon was packed wall-to-wall with fans on Saturday morning as the Tampa Bay Lightning kicked off their first day of scrimmages. Playing two 20-minute halves, Team Black and Team White skated to a 1-1 tie thanks to goals by Vincent Lecavalier for Team Black and Kyle Wanvig for Team White.

With only 30 skaters in training camp this season, the 10 a.m. match marked the first of four days of scrimmages between the teams. Both goals were posted within the first five minutes of the game in what turned into a strong showing by netminders Marc Denis, Johan Holmqvist and Karri Ramo.

Wanvig opened the scoring for Team White at 3:30 of the first by connecting on a pass from Brad Richards. Wanvig, in his first training camp with the Lightning, posted 18 points (11 goals, seven assists) in 23 games with the Springfield Falcons last season.

Less than a minute later Lecavalier responded for Team Black as he fired a quick shot off a cross-zone pass from Vaclav Prospal, beating Denis and tying the score. Paul Ranger earned the second assist.

The three goalies split time between the pipes during Saturday’s scrimmage. Denis and Holmqvist each spent 30 minutes in goal, making nine and 10 saves, respectively. Despite playing only 20 minutes, netminder Karri Ramo stood out by stopping all 16 shots he faced.

Early in the contest Jason Ward caught Chris Gratton with a breakout pass as he skated down the left side. Gratton fired the shot from the left faceoff circle but Holmqvist denied the attempt with a save off his right arm. Minutes later Holmqvist denied a slapshot by defenseman Filip Kuba.

During the scrimmage two penalty shots were awarded but both skaters were denied on their attempts. Late in the first period Mike Lundin took the first penalty shot, but after he switched to his backhand Ramo smothered the puck. Early in the second period defenseman Matt Smaby skated in against Denis for a penalty shot, but the Lightning netminder made a glove save to keep the score tied at one.

With Ramo starting the second period in net for Team White, Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis combined for one of the toughest scoring chances of the afternoon. From the left faceoff circle, Lecavalier passed backwards to St. Louis who fired a shot through traffic, but was unable to beat Ramo.

Midway through the second period Holmqvist replaced Ramo on Team White just prior to stopping a shot by Lecavalier. The Lightning center fired a shot from the low right faceoff circle that Holmqvist grabbed for a glove save.
