TEAM WHITE POSTS 2-1 WIN ON DAY THREE
Following up a pair of ties during the first two days of camp, Team White emerged as the Day Three victor on second-period goals by Chris Gratton and Jason Ward to beat Team Black, 2-1. Goaltender Karri Ramo played 33 minutes for Team White and made 13 saves on 14 shots.

Early in the match-up, Vaclav Prospal put Team Black on the scoreboard with his first goal of the camp. Skating hard along the right sideboards, Prospal cut to the front of the net and put a wrist-shot over the glove of Ramo.

Allowing only his second goal in three scrimmages, Ramo followed the play by denying center Craig MacDonald at the side of the crease. Karl Stewart made a pass to MacDonald from behind the net and MacDonald fired a one-time shot on Ramo. The Lightning netminder covered the puck on the play.

Moments later, Martin St. Louis and Prospal combined for an attempt on Ramo. St. Louis fired a shot through traffic and Prospal tried to stuff the puck into the net as players fought for position at the crease, but Ramo managed to cover the puck.

Down 1-0 going into the second period, Gratton tied the contest at the 10-minute mark with his first goal. Gathering a breakout pass from Matt Smaby at the blueline, Gratton skated in alone on Johan Holmqvist and fired a wrist-shot that beat Holmqvist on the glove side.

Less than four minutes after Gratton’s goal, Ward added his first goal of training camp to give Team White the lead. Center Brad Richards shot the puck as Ward skated in toward Holmqvist and Ward got his stick on the rebound to re-direct it for the score.

Through three scrimmages, Richards leads all skaters with three points, all assists. Michel Ouellet is second on Team White with a goal and an assist, and Prospal leads Team Black with a goal and an assist.

Holmqvist garnered the most ice time among the three goaltenders Monday morning, playing 37 minutes before being pulled in the last minute for an extra attacker on Team Black. He faced 20 shots and made 18 saves, including a Richards’ back-hand attempt early in the second frame and a Gratton wrist-shot from the slot in the final minutes of the game.

Goaltender Marc Denis shut out his opponents for the second consecutive day, stopping all nine shots faced through 19 minutes of play.

As the Lightning’s first preseason game approaches, the teams will face off for their fourth and final scrimmage of training camp Tuesday morning at the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon. Tampa Bay prepares to face off against the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night (7:30 p.m.) at the St. Pete Times Forum.
