LIGHTNING RE-ASSIGN THREE TO NORFOLK
TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Lightning have re-assigned defenseman Matt Smaby, left wing Mathieu Darche and center Craig MacDonald to the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League, Executive Vice President and General Manager Jay Feaster announced.

Darche, a 6-foot-1, 217-pound native of Montreal, Quebec, played in 13 games with the Lightning this season. He scored his first goal since the 2001-02 season, the second of his career, October 20 vs. Atlanta. His three assists and four points this season are each career highs, and he was averaging 10:57 of ice time with Tampa Bay. Darche, 30, has now played in 41 career NHL games with two goals and 6 points. He was signed as a free agent on July 2, 2007.

Smaby, 6-foot-5 and 222 pounds, made his NHL debut with the Lightning on October 4 against the New Jersey Devils. He has played in four games with Tampa Bay this season and recorded four penalty minutes with one shot on goal. He made his AHL debut last season with Springfield and played in 66 games, tallying two goals and 16 points. Smaby, 23, has played in four games with Norfolk this season and recorded an even rating with seven penalty minutes and three shots on goal. The Lightning selected Smaby in the second round, 41st overall, at the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

MacDonald, a 6-foot-1, 201-pound native of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, skated in 14 games with the Lightning this season and recorded one assist. He is a veteran of 174 NHL games with eight goals and 23 points. He returns to Norfolk where he served as the team’s captain in 2006-07. He was signed as a free agent on July 2, 2007.
