STUDENTS IN NEED GET A CHANCE TO 'SHOP WITH THE LIGHTNING'
The Lightning Foundation and Dick’s Sports goods will give each of 68 students from the academy a $100 gift certificate to shop with Tampa Bay Lightning players throughout the store. There will be a pizza party afterward for the players and children. The event starts at 3 p.m. at the Dick's Sporting Goods in the Brandon Town Center.
Metropolitan Ministries Academy, opened in 1998, is a Hillsborough Country school that helps meet the educational and socio-emotional needs of homeless students. During the 2005-06 school year, the Academy earned a B grade from the school district.
Metropolitan Ministries is a homeless shelter in Tampa, and the Academy works with a population of homeless and near homeless students. Among many other goals, the Academy encourages students to develop a sense of self-discipline and responsibility in work and behavior. Forty of the students attending the event live in the neighborhood near Metropolitan Ministries and 28 of the students live with their families at the shelter.
Tampa Bay Lightning players planning to attend the event include Mathieu Darche, Marc Denis, Jan Hlavac, Johan Holmqvist, Doug Janik, Andreas Karlsson, Filip Kuba, Michel Ouellet, Vaclav Prospal, Nick Tarnasky and Jason Ward.
