THE LIGHTNING INSIDER
"Take it down, Chaps" was the fitting line used by our Irish waiter last night at McSorley's Old Ale House as he deposited four pints of McSorley's Dark on our sawdust-covered table. Established in 1854 when Franklin Pierce was President, McSorely's is just one of the must-visit spots in New York's Greenwich Village.
The Slaughtered Lamb Pub (pictured), located just past Vanderbilt Hall amid the NYU buildings in the Village, is another spot to check out. The motif inside is based on the movie "An American Werewolf in London," and the beer selection is as varied as the crowd. Just don't park yourself on a bench in nearby Washington Square after knocking back a few too many, because the only living things better fed than the many NYU students are the dozens of rats scurrying around the Square like squirrels after dark. And they’re not afraid of humans!
The Lightning practiced at the expansive Chelsea Piers sports complex today, located on the banks of the Hudson River near the Hell's Kitchen" neighborhood of Manhattan. The driving range at Chelsea Piers was featured in the movie "Serendipity," and the complex also houses the soundstage where “Law & Order” is filmed. In fact, a door next to the rink the Lightning were practicing on led directly onto the set of the show, and filming was taking place today. Among the different settings they’ve created there for filming are a courtroom, a police station and a jail.
After practice - which included a ton of skating and some heavy contact drills - the team bused back to Madison Square Garden in full gear so the players could shower and change.
