Canada Beats USA In Final Minute, Kuba Scores First Goal In Czech Win

After going down 3-0 in the second period in the Halifax Metro Centre today, Team USA managed to tie the game at 4 against tournament-favorite Canada. The game looked to be going to overtime, but Ottawa’s Dany Heatley had other plans, netting the game-winner with 47 seconds remaining to give Canada the 5-4 win.


Tampa Bay right wing Martin St. Louis notched an assist for Canada on the first goal of the game for his third point of the tournament. Lightning center and Team USA captain Jeff Halpern left the game in the third period with an undisclosed injury.
Kuba


With the win, Team Canada clinched first place in Group B, with Team USA securing second place.


Lightning defenseman Filip Kuba scored his first goal of the tournament for his third point in the Czech Republic’s 7-2 win over Italy this evening in Quebec City. The win puts the Czech Republic in second place in Group D, behind Russia.


In other games played today, Russia defeated Denmark, 4-1, to secure the top spot in Group D. Latvia shut out Slovenia, 3-0, for its first win of the tournament in Group B to garner the third place spot in that group.
