  • With a four-goal second period, Canada defeated Sweden, 5-4, to advance to the championship game. Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis, with nine points in the tournament, was held scoreless. Washington’s Mike Green had a goal and two assists to lead the Canadians, and Ottawa’s Dany Heatley added a goal and an assist. Through eight games, Heatley leads all Canadian skaters with 18 points (11g, 7a).

Russia continued their shutout streak Friday afternoon, blanking Finland, 4-0. Russia has outscored opponents 10-0 since the quarterfinals, riding the hot play of San Jose goaltender Evgeny Nabokov. With his 23-save performance Friday, Nabokov has stopped 92 of 97 shots faced in the tournament for a .948 save percentage and a 1.25 GAA.

The two teams will meet Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the Gold Medal game. Canada brought home the Gold in the 2007 World Championships in Moscow, and Russia looks to return the favor on Canadian ice. Russia won a Bronze Medal last year.

Sweden and Finland will play Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. for the Bronze Medal contest. Finland took home a Silver Medal at the 2007 World Championships.
