Minnesota’s Niklas Backstrom, who started in net for the Finnish team in eight of nine games, recorded his first shutout of the tournament when it counted most. With Sweden outshooting Finland, 36-13, it was Backstrom who made the difference and helped bring his team a medal.
Despite being severely outshot, Finland made the most of their opportunities, and Antti Pihlstrom led the way with two goals. Tampa Bay’s Jussi Jokinen, held scoreless in Saturday’s game, played in all nine tournament games for Finland, scoring one goal and adding three assists.
