Lightning Foundation Grant Spotlight: Berkeley Preparatory School

On April 23, the Lightning Foundation awarded grants to 16 local organizations totaling $120,500 at the Community Awards and Donor Recognition Reception. Grant applicants were asked to detail their organizations and give a proposed program or project, along with a description of how it qualifies under the Lightning Foundation's funding guidelines. The Foundation's Board of Directors selected the 16 organizations.

Continuing with its mission to support education within the Tampa Bay community, the Lightning Foundation awarded a first-time grant to Berkeley Preparatory School.

"Berkeley Preparatory School is excited to partner with the Lightning Foundation as we seek to enrich the lives of youth attending Berkeley from around the Tampa Bay area," said Laura Grams, director of development for Berkeley Prep.

The grant awarded will provide non-tuition, ancillary aid for two Upper Division financial aid students for one year. This includes, but is not limited to, a laptop, books, uniforms and lunch fees for the students.

"The Lightning Foundation grant, along with two private gifts, was used as a challenge match to raise funds to help students with expenses," Grams said.

The goal of the grant is to deliver an optimum education for the students and to accommodate the students' needs and growth, as well as encourage the students to become productive global citizens.

"This grant award offers a unique opportunity to raise awareness of Berkeley scholarships and financial aid available to students," Grams said. "Our scholarship recipients play an invaluable role in the Berkeley community by enriching the lives and spirit of everyone around them."

Located in Tampa, Berkeley Preparatory School is a secondary, co-educational, independent day school that is dedicated to providing the best possible environment to nurture the intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical development of each student.

"Our school’s vision states, 'Berkeley puts people in the world who make a positive difference.' We thank the Lightning Foundation for helping us give students an opportunity to make a positive difference in the world," Grams said.
