Contrary to published reports on TSN.ca as well as in a local paper, the Lightning have not signed defenseman Marek Malik. My understanding after speaking to Lightning executive VP of hockey operations is that Malik is due to arrive in Tampa tonight and will have to undergo a physical tomorrow before he can start skating. It sounds like he'll be here on a tryout before a decision is made about signing him, and that there’s no chance of him being in the lineup tomorrow night. If he arrives in great shape and is signed quickly Saturday could be a possibility, though it’s not likely at this point.

It was a rough practice today for the Lightning, with a focus on special teams. Vincent Lecavalier and Ryan Malone both took sticks to the face, with Lecavalier receiving a bloody nose and Malone getting the worst of it. He was headed to the doctor after practice to get stitches for a gash through his eyebrow and at the top of his nose.

Head coach Barry Melrose said Olaf Kolzig will get the start tomorrow against the Islanders, and he challenged the team’s skill players to score more goals.

“They need to go to the net and win more physical battles,” he said.
