Growing up in Markham, Ontario, less than a half hour north of the hockey-rich city of Toronto, he first laced up a pair of skates at the age of two. During this special edition of Inside the Lightning, Stamkos, along with his family, coaches, friends and teammates discuss his extraordinary talent on the ice, as well as his maturity off of it. Exceptional abilities which made him Tampa Bay’s number one overall draft choice in the NHL Entry Draft on June 20, 2008.
Sun Sports’ producers traveled to his hometown and sat down with his parents, Chris and Lesley. They detail the responsibility they shared of ensuring that their son realize his full potential on the ice, while at the same time always enjoying the game of hockey. They also stressed the importance of doing well in school and how he earned honors in the classroom.
The two most influential coaches who helped develop Stamkos’ remarkable talents were Paul Titanic and Stephen Gaunce. The two coached him for the majority of his minor hockey league career and Stamkos credits Titanic for allowing him to be creative on the ice while refining his game. Both coaches taught him to respect the game and his opponents but note it was his parents who instilled his hard work ethic and competitiveness.
