Bolts on Break: Ryan Malone

Lightning forward Ryan Malone takes time to paint with his one year old son.

The glamorous off-season life of a professional hockey player. Parties? Banquets? Travel? What’s next?

Unpacking boxes?

When the Website caught up with Ryan Malone this week, he was in his garage at his new home in Minnesota, unpacking boxes. Malone and his wife, Abby, had purchased the home, just outside Minneapolis, just before he was acquired by the Lightning from the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 28, 2008.

There was no time to do anything but stack all the boxes in the garage and head for their new home in Tampa, so the unpacking, while time consuming, was long overdue.

Malone planned to play for the U.S. team in the World Ice Hockey Championship which began in late April in Switzerland, but when an Evengi Malkin slapshot broke his hand on April 7, Malone’s plans changed and it was time to put a dent in the empty boxes in the garage.

There has been a brief trip to Pittsburgh to visit his father, Greg Malone, head scout for the Lightning, and his grandparents, but for Malone, it’s been an off-season of house work and workouts.

Malone currently plans to return to Tampa in August, in plenty of time for the opening of training camp. But for now – the weather is pretty great in Minnesota.

“I remember being in Tampa last year in July,” Malone recalled. “It was heat-stoke in a day.”
