Rookie Camp: Day 3
Today’s camp, day three, marked a change of pace for the prospects. Activities were largely confined to on-ice testing, somewhat less frenetic than the all-out drills which characterized the first two days, but certainly not less import.

On one end of the ice, Lightning Goaltending Coach Cap Raeder put his three netminders, Dustin Tokarski, Jaroslav Janus and Michael Zador, through a series of drills, firing pucks from all angles and sometimes using a board placed on the ice to simulate deflections. After working with the youngsters for three days, Raeder said he was impressed with each of them.

“All three have shown me something,” Raeder said. “They’re all good kids and good workers. I see they’ve been working on things from our Rookie Camp, so that impresses me.”

Today marked the first on-ice appearance at camp of Assistant Coach Wes Walz, Video Coach Nigel Kirwan and new Associate Coach Rick Wilson, a sure sign that the pace is quickening in front of the opening of the full squad training camp on Saturday.

The players skated timed training sprints from the goal line to the blue line. Dana Tyrell registered the fastest time of the day with a clocking of 2.82 seconds. Alex Hutchings was second best with a time of 2.86.

Prospect camp draws to a close tomorrow with a 10:45 a.m. scrimmage. The 17th training camp in Lightning history will open at the Brandon Ice Sports Forum on Saturday with player physicals and on-ice testing, and them breaking out the pucks in earnest on Sunday at 10 a.m.  Practices are free and open to the public and the Lightning will host a fan party at the Ice Sports Forum with entertainment, fan land games, the Bolt Brigade and ThunderBug on Sunday from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.  Camp moves to the St. Pete Times Forum on Tuesday, September 15 with the Lightning providing free lunch for fans in attendance between 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
