Lightning Junior Girls Camp concludes with grand performance
In addition to watching another sensational performance by the fan-favorite Lightning Girls at Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh, those in attendance included in the sellout crowd at the St. Pete Times Forum received an added bonus during the game’s second intermission.
Fans caught a glimpse into the future as approximately 30 girls, ages 5-12, accompanied the Lightning Girls for a routine at center ice in which they displayed some major moves, despite being small in stature.
As the current Lightning Girls dazzled fans with their performance, prospective candidates followed along, an activity that had become commonplace over the last week at the Lightning Junior Girls Clinic.
The clinic is an annual hallmark of the Lightning Girls’ season, designed to promote interest in dancing and cheering among a young, female population, while also providing the Lightning Girls themselves with the opportunity to interact with kids.
“The Lightning Girls Junior Clinic is an event that I have really looked forward to all season,” current member of the Lightning Girls Erin Sujansky said. “The kids are adorable and are eager to learn, and the week-long session allows both the rest of the Lightning Girls and the younger prospective dancers to interact with each other and for us to teach each other as well. But the most important thing is fun.”
After two rehearsals at the St. Pete Times Forum on Mar. 8 and Mar. 10, the girls received a once-in-a-lifetime chance to perform their skills in front of welcoming crowd of about 20, 300. As the arena lights went dim, and with the music cranked up, the dancers displayed their moves to the fitting anthem “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” which nicely tied into the theme of the entire week.
For attending the camp, the Lightning Junior Girls received a free t-shirt, pompoms and a photo opportunity with the 2009-10 Lightning Girls squad, as well as an open skate session on the Forum ice.
