How can you get involved?

During the week of March 21 through March 28, Floridians will be encouraged to recommend friends and loved ones to contact the Florida Quitline at 1-877-U-CAN-NOW or at www.FloridaQuitline.com for help in overcoming their addiction to tobacco products, as “Be Free For Me” will serve as the theme for week-long school and community-based activities and large-scale sponsorships. In addition to its partnership with the Lightning and Sun Sports, Tobacco Free Florida has also partnered with FOX Sports Florida to extend the campaign’s message even further by utilizing popular professional and college teams such as the Orlando Magic, Florida Panthers, Florida State University baseball team and Miami Heat.

Pre-game activities will begin on the Plaza at 4:30 p.m. with the Frozen Funk performing live on stage. The Tobacco Free Florida Smokifier will be present, as well as an informational table which will be promoting the “Be Free For Me” campaign. Fans may also receive complimentary giveaways such as hats, t-shirts and koozies, courtesy of Tobacco Free Florida. Representatives will also lead the crowd in saying “Let’s Play Hockey” before the puck drops.

Once the action begins, several Lightning players and numerous children will deliver messages on LightningVision to educate those in attendance about the dangers of smoking. Additional opportunities for fans to win great prizes will continue at the second intermission when lucky winners will be chosen to participate in the “Shoot To Be Free” contest and an additional sweepstakes, in which fans will race oversized foam phones to the top of their sections to encourage tobacco users to call the Florida Quitline.

The Tampa Bay Lightning has chosen to be free for our fans to help rid Florida of secondhand smoke for Tobacco Free Florida Week. During the week, fans are encouraged to donate their Facebook status to help spread the word at facebook.com/tobaccofreeflorida.
