The NHL Entry Draft will take place on June 25-26 in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on Versus, NHL Network and TSN. Prior to the draft, tampabaylightning.com caught up with Ryan Johansen to ask him a few questions.
TBL: Draft Day is rapidly approaching and all the hard work you have put in throughout your junior career will come to fruition. What are your thoughts heading into the Draft?
RJ: Every day that it gets closer and closer I get more excited. It has been a pretty surreal year. Now that it’s close, it’s getting really exciting.
TBL: Aside from having your name called, what are you looking forward to the most on Draft Day?
RJ: One big moment would be watching my linemates get drafted as well. We went through a lot together, battled together, and we on the same line so I think it would be an awesome experience to see them up on stage too.
TBL: Have you given any thought into what team you would fit in with best?
RJ: Not really, I just want to go to whatever team wants me the most and whichever team gives me the best opportunity. I’ll be excited to go anywhere.
TBL: What do you think it would be like to wear the Lightning sweater?
RJ: It would be unbelievable just to play for an NHL team. But I do remember meeting Steve Yzerman at the NHL Combine and talking with him, and I know to play under him would be an incredible opportunity. Our meeting was focused on him and his staff learning about me and my background so that was exciting to know they were taking an interest in me.
TBL: What advice have you received regarding what to expect on Draft Day?
RJ: What I’ve been told is that anything can happen. You could be rated in the Top Ten and end up going late in the first round or even worse than that, so I just have to expect that things might not go as you think they are going to go. Nothing is written in stone. You don’t want to get too engaged in something based on what somebody tells you such as where you might go or when you might get taken because things can change really quickly.
TBL: Who are some NHL players who you really look up to and model your game after?
RJ: When I was younger I used to watch videos of Bobby Orr and then as I got a little order I would look up to Steve Yzerman and Joe Sakic. Nowadays I really admire Joe Thornton, Ryan Getzlaf and Jason Spezza. They all have tremendous qualities about their game and they are tremendous hockey players.
TBL: Other than the Draft, what are your weekend plans while out in California?
RJ: We’re taking a little vacation and going down to San Diego. We’re planning on going to Sea World, Universal Studios and places like that. I’m looking forward to it and I’m sure it will be a lot of fun.
