Jets claim rights to Antti Miettinen
Tampa Bay lose rights to acquiring the six-time 10-goal scorer
Rather than packing bathing suits, Antti Miettinen will be packing his snow suits instead.
One day after the Lightning agreed to terms with the free-agent forward, Tampa Bay lost all rights to acquiring the six-time 10-goal scorer after he was claimed off waivers by the division-rival Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday just before noon.
Miettinen began the season with Ak-Bars Kazan of Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League, but was released from his contract by the club last week, at which point any team was eligible to sign him as an available free agent. Even though the Bolts had agreed to terms that included a two-year contract, Miettinen had to be placed on waivers by Tampa Bay, exposing him to the other 29 NHL teams in keeping with a clause in the collective bargaining agreement.
