Norfolk ties AHL record with 17th straight win

The Norfolk Admirals matched the American Hockey League record for consecutive victories by routing Charlotte 7-2 on Friday night for their 17th straight win.
The only other team in the 76-year history of the AHL to win 17 straight games during a season is the 2004-05 Philadelphia Phantoms. Norfolk will try to break the mark when it visits Charlotte on Sunday afternoon.
Thirteen Norfolk skaters registered a point on Friday, led by rookies Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat with a goal and an assist each. Johnson, the reigning AHL Player of the Week, has six consecutive multi-point games and has 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) during a nine-game scoring streak.
Rookie Cory Conacher moved into a tie for the league lead with his 32nd goal of the season. Jaroslav Janus made 30 saves for his ninth consecutive win, setting a franchise record for a Norfolk goaltender.
The victory, combined with a loss by Portland, made the Admirals -- Tampa Bay's AHL affiliate -- the first team to clinch a berth in the Calder Cup Playoffs. Norfolk (44-18-1-2) leads the overall standings with 91 points and is closing in on its first division title since 2003.
