Field set for Frozen Four in Tampa Bay April 5 & 7
The madness of March continued away from the hardcourt over the weekend, as four teams made it through the overall field of 16 to claim their spots in the 2012 NCAA Frozen Four, which will kick off in two weeks at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

Union College will compete against Ferris State in one of two national semifinal games to be played on Thursday, April 5, while Minnesota will play Boston College in the other. The two victors of each match will then meet for the national championship on Saturday, April 7.

Both Union and Ferris State will be appearing in the tournament for the first time in their respective schools’ histories. Union defeated UMass-Lowell, 4-2, on Saturday night to win the NCAA East Regional in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Ferris State, the lone remaining CCHA team in the tournament, then beat Cornell to emerge out of the NCAA Midwest Regional held in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Minnesota and Boston College, on the other hand, are making their returns to the Frozen Four after a brief hiatus.

With a 5-2 victory over top-seeded North Dakota, the Golden Gophers are making plans to attend the tournament for the first time since 2005. Boston College, the Hockey East regular season and tournament champions, will take a 17-game winning streak into the tournament, as it makes its 10th Frozen Four appearance in the past 15 years. It defeated the defending champion Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, 4-0, to advance to the tournament.
