Day 5: World Championships Round Up
The Lightning players enjoyed a full day of action on Friday at the World Championships being held in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.
Both Team USA and Team Canada emerged victorious on the day, while Sweden surrendered a two-goal lead to suffer its first defeat of the tournament.
Bolts forward JT Brown scored a goal and also was a plus-1 in 10:18 of ice time, while teammate Nate Thompson also earned a plus-1 rating and logged 12:28 of ice time as the American side defeated Kazakhstan 3-2 in overtime.
Brown opened the scoring to record a point for the second consecutive game before the back-and-forth affair ended in a tied game heading into overtime. Justin Faulk won it for Team USA just 4:38 into the extra session to keep his squad in the hunt for the top seed in the Helsinki group.
Teddy Purcell, meanwhile, registered an even rating in 8:18 of ice time as the Canadians defeated the Finns 5-3. The win helped Team Canada claim the top spot in Group A.
Also in action on Friday was Victor Hedman, who was fourth on Team Sweden with 21:01 of ice time and who also had four shots on the day.
The Swedes held a 3-1 lead in the second period, until a hat trick by Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin helped the Russians pull away and finish with a 7-3 triumph over the host country.
