Lightning, Transitions Optical Introduce Score with Reading Program
Initiative Aimed to Help First Graders Read 20 Minutes Per Day
TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning, in conjunction with presenting sponsor Transitions Optical and associate sponsor Bright House Networks, introduced the Score With Reading program today. This free reading incentive program is designed for Tampa Bay area first grade teachers to implement in their classrooms from October 15 – December 15.
Score With Reading encourages first grade students to read at least 20 minutes per day and keep track of minutes they read. The completely free program motivates students to become all-star readers with reading milestones and the ability to win prizes. Teachers are also incentivized for participating in the program.
“We are pleased to be able to introduce this reading initiative for students, hopefully further inspiring them to embrace reading and education and to support teachers’ efforts in the classroom,” said Jeff Vinik, Chairman and Governor of the Lightning. “We appreciate all the support that this collaborative project is receiving from the local education foundations, school districts, schools, parents and, most importantly, the classroom teachers.”
Students who read 20 minutes per day for 20 days (400 total minutes) by the end of the two-month program will earn a free ThunderBug Kids Club membership and a ThunderBug sticker. Students who read 20 minutes a day for 40 days (800 total minutes) by the end of the program will also earn a free ticket voucher to an upcoming select Tampa Bay Lightning home game. All classrooms that go above and beyond the goal of 800 minutes per student will be entered to win a classroom visit by ThunderBug and another Lightning celebrity by the end of the school year. All teachers who register for the program will also receive two free Lightning tickets, plus be eligible to receive a limited number of cash stipends to be used in the classroom.

“Transitions Optical is excited to be partnering with the Lightning on this great educational platform for Hillsborough first-grade students,” said Brian Hauser, General Manager, of Transitions Optical North America. “With an average of one in four children having an undetected vision problem that can interfere with their ability to read and learn, proper eye care and eyewear are critical to performance inside the classroom and in everyday life. As a community partner, we at Transitions Optical are devoted to creating awareness for healthy sight and helping children see and learn.”
The Lightning is collaborating with “Read on myOn,” to provide access to more than 2,000 free online books to all Tampa Bay area students participating in the program. “Read on myOn” offers a personalized literacy environment that encourages students at all reading levels by providing the largest integrated library of digital books.
