Lightning Conference Week 8 Recap
The Lightning Conference just wrapped up its eighth week of the 2012-13 high school hockey season and Mitchell leads the league at the mid-way point with an 8-0-1 record and 17 points, not to mention allowing just 16 goals through nine games.
Friday night’s action saw winless Steinbrenner give Jesuit a run for their money, as they came within two goals, only to lose, 5-3. Meanwhile, Newsome was firing on all cylinders as they skated to a 13-3 victory against Wiregrass.
Steinbrenner and Berkeley will be looking for their first victories of the season when action resumes this week with games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday night.
For the first time this season the Lightning Conference has a new leading scorer as Newsome forward Jared Goudreau’s 23 goals and 42 points in eight games are tops in the league. Goudreau collected two goals and four assists in his teams’ 13-3 victory against Wiregrass to propel him past Palm Harbor’s Hunter Sheehan as the top point producer in the league.
Mitchell goaltender Joey Robinson continues to shine this season, posting a 1.78 goals-against average and two shutouts as his squad ranks atop the league standings.
Palm Harbor netminder Joseph Whyte has also had a great season, recording a 2.57 goals-against average and a 6-1-0 record with two shutouts.
Action resumes early this week as there are five games scheduled for Monday and four on tap for Tuesday.
East Lake (8-1-0) battles Wharton (7-1-1) on Monday in a matchup of two of the top teams in the league, while winless Seminole (0-8-0) will look to build off the momentum they gained in their tight loss last week as they play River Ridge (4-4-1).
