The Tampa Bay Lightning have agreed to terms with forward Nate Thomson on a four-year contract extension, vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman announced today.

"We're very pleased to have agreed to a contract extension with Nate," said Yzerman upon making the announcement. "He has and will continue to be a very important member of our team both on and off the ice.”

Thompson, 28, has skated in 30 games this season with the Lightning, posting six goals and 10 points to go along with six penalty minutes. The 6-foot, 212-pound forward ranks second on the team in hits with 58, third in faceoff percentage (50.6%) and is tied for fifth in goals.

"I'd like to thank Steve Yzerman and the organization for having the confidence in me to make me a part of this team for the next four years," said Thompson. "I see a bright future here for the Lightning and I very much want to be a part of it."

The Anchorage, Alaska native has skated in 295 career NHL games with the Lightning, New York Islanders and Boston Bruins, recording 29 goals and 64 points with 161 penalty minutes. During the 2010-11 season with the Lightning, he set career highs in goals (10), assists (15) and points (25). He was claimed off waivers by the Lightning from the Islanders on January 21, 2010. He was originally selected by the Bruins in the sixth round, 183rd overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Thompson was named to the 2012 U.S. Men’s National Team for the IIHF World Championships which were held in Finland/Sweden last spring and recorded two goals in eight games.
