The Big Story: The Lightning sit just one point out of the final playoff spot with 63 points, and are just two games behind the Flyers for the East’s sixth position. Steven Stamkos has been a big reason for the team’s surge into the post-season picture, carrying with him a tie for the league’s longest active point streak at 13 games, which also leaves him just one away from becoming the franchise single-season record holder.
Team Scope:
LIGHTNING – Tampa Bay plays at home tonight where it has won six out of the last eight before traveling to Washington on Thursday, a trip which kicks off a stretch in which the Lightning will play four of the next five on the road. Prior to the Olympic break, the Bolts wrapped up their previous stint away from home with a 5-2 loss to the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Steven Stamkos and Steve Downie each scored, and in doing so, extended their career-high point streaks to 13 and seven games respectively.
FLYERS – Philadelphia enters the St. Pete Times Forum for the second of four games on the road. The team’s trip away from home got off to a good start before the Olympic break with a 6-2 win over Montreal backed by a hat trick from Danny Briere. Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and Blair Betts also had goals as the club earned its fourth consecutive victory.
Who’s Hot: Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos is riding a franchise-tying 13-game point streak with 10 goals and 13 assists over that span, while teammate Steve Downie has 10 points in his last seven straight. Martin St. Louis has also tallied 16 points in his last 10 contests for the Lightning.
- The Flyers’ Scott Hartnell has six assists in his last four and Jeff Carter has scored five goals, also in his last four. In addition, Danny Briere has amassed five points in his last three games.
Injury Report: LIGHTNING – David Hale (lower body, placed on Injured Reserve), Zenon Konopka (lower body, day-to-day). FLYERS – Ray Emery (hip) and Ryan Parent (spinal surgery, out 4 weeks).
Quotable: “It’s a lot of fun. I think a lot of the guys are ready to get back, work hard, and make that push for the playoffs. We just need to be consistent, we all need to be on the same page, and we need to play together for the whole 60 minutes.” – Lightning defenseman Mike Lundin
