The Big Story: Tampa Bay has won six in a row against Atlanta and also comes in to tonight's game as winners of four in its last six, although the team has gained points in five of six games this season. Tampa Bay has also won three of its last five games played at Philips Arena. Steven Stamkos comes in with nine goals and eight assists in 13 games against Atlanta, which are his highest totals against any opponent.
Team Scope:
LIGHTNING – Tampa Bay plays one game on the road at Philips Arena tonight before returning home for a two-game set beginning Sunday against Nashville. The Lightning are playing their second consecutive game tonight and their second back-to-back set of the season, following last night’s tough overtime loss to the New York Islanders. Matt Moulson’s game-winning goal in the extra period needed video assistance to be confirmed, but the Lightning still earned a point after getting goals from Sean Bergenheim and Martin St. Louis, as well as a 22-save effort by Dan Ellis.
THRASHERS – Atlanta plays its second and final home game tonight against its division rivals before heading to the nation’s capital for the first of a two-game road swing. The Thrashers have won two of the last three, with Wednesday’s 4-1 loss at Buffalo the only thing keeping them from going on a three-game win streak. Tobias Enstrom scored with the man advantage for Atlanta, but the lone goal was not enough to overcome a three-goal deficit in the third period.
Who’s Hot: Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos has 10 points in six games for the Lightning and teammate Steve Downie has four points in his last four contests. Dominic Moore also has three points in his last four games for the Bolts and Martin St. Louis has recorded points in two straight. Atlanta’s Tobias Enstrom, Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien each have four points in their last three games.
Injury Report: LIGHTNING – Mattias Ohlund (knee, out 2 weeks); THRASHERS – Ondrej Pavelec (undisclosed injury).
Quotable: “At this moment right now it might be hard, but if you look at the long season when things are going well, you are not going to look at the start of the season, you will look at what's going on then. It's part of hockey. All players go through it at some point during the season, it just happens to be taking part early in the season. At one point the team is going to need a big goal and maybe that's when it's going to be my time.” – Simon Gagne, who is seeking to break out from a slow start
