NOTEWORTHY

  • Steven Stamkos’ goal made him the first NHL center since 1995-96 (Mario Lemieux/69 goals) to get 60 goals in a season.
  • Stamkos became the second NHL player since the 2005 NHL Lockout to get 60 goals in a season (Alexander Ovechkin/65/2007-08) and the 20th player in NHL history to record 60 goals in a season.
  • Teddy Purcell’s hat trick was his first hat trick this season, and the second hat trick of his career. Purcell’s first hat trick came against PHX on 2/23/11.
  • Martin St. Louis’ assist on Stamkos’ goal allowed him to finish the season leading the Lightning with 49 assists. St. Louis had 10 points (2g, 8a) in his final nine games.
  • JT Brown’s assist on Purcell’s second goal was his first NHL point, coming in his fifth NHL game.
  • With a 38-36-8 record, Tampa Bay finished above .500 for the second straight season.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Steven Stamkos scored his 60th goal of the season and Teddy Purcell had a hat trick - including the overtime winner - and the Tampa Bay Lightning ended their season with a 4-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday.

Fans recognized Stamkos' feat and gave him a standing ovation after Martin St. Louis sent a pass to the front of the net and Stamkos fired it over Ondrej Pavelec's glove at 3:29 of the third period.

Only Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals has reached the 60-goal mark since 1996.

Purcell scored at 1:08 of overtime when he took a pass from Victor Hedman and sent a high shot over Pavelec's glove again.

With just 53 seconds left in the third, Jets forward Jim Slater scored his second goal of the night to send the game into overtime.

Blake Wheeler set up the tying goal when he sent a pass from the side of the net in front to Wheeler, who shot it over Dwayne Roloson's stick.

Nik Antropov also scored for Winnipeg, while Pavelec made 21 saves in the loss.

Vincent Lecavalier added two assists for the Lightning. Roloson made 28 stops for the win.

Jets fans gave the players a long standing ovation before and after game.

Although they chanted "No goal Stamkos" all night every time he had a chance at the puck and booed initially, Winnipeg fans gave him a rousing ovation a few seconds after he scored.

Just 19 players have scored 60 goals or more in a single season.

The group includes players such as Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Brett Hull.

Alex Ovechkin is the only player to score 60 since 1996. The Washington Capitals star had 65 goals in the 2007-08 season.
