Lightning pick up point in shootout loss to Boston

TD Garden in Boston continues to be a house of horror for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Bolts lost 3-2 in the shootout to the Bruins on Thursday night and suffered their 10th straight loss in Boston.

But for the first time since March 25, 2010, the Lightning earned a point in Beantown. Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand each scored in the shootout for the Bruins while Nikita Kucherov and Jonathan Drouin each failed to score on their attempts.

"We gave ourselves a chance to win a game. Tough," Lightning captain Steven Stamkos said. " Again this is kind of like the Nashville game where you know you want to get those two points, we’re not satisfied with the one but when you go on the road, Montreal, Boston, and you get three out of four points at this time of the year, definitely we’ll take that."

The Lightning pick up one point in the standings, moving into a tie with Montreal for first place in the Atlantic Division with 91 points.

Both Ben Bishop and Tuukka Rask made several key saves in the final minutes of regulation to secure a point for each team. Bishop made 28 saves in the loss.

Vladislav Namestnikov, playing on the Triplets line in Ondrej Palat’s absence, scored the game-tying goal eight minutes into the third period after Bergeron gave the Bruins the lead with a one-time goal from the point 2 minutes into the third period.

Tyler Johnson picked up an assist on Namestnikov’s goal to extend his scoring streak to eight games.

The Lightning, after being outshot 15-9 in the first period, outplayed the Bruins in the final two periods registering 28 shots on net to the Bruins 15.

Tampa Bay played well after a slow start in its first game since losing Palat, Braydon Coburn and Cedric Paquette to long-term injuries.

"We’ve played with injuries before," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "We’ve played the whole season pretty much without [Braydon] Coburn, so our D [defense] didn’t change too much. Would we have like to have him in there? No doubt. But I thought we stood up well, and for Vlad [Vladislav Namestnikov] to come in, and Ang [Mike Angelidis] chipped in well, they were a couple of angry birds down there knocking guys around. So I thought everybody elevated their game. We keep playing like we have the last couple of games here we’ll be all right."

More than a minute of overtime was played 3-on-3 because Alex Killorn was called for embellishment on Chris Kelly’s holding call at the beginning of overtime. Bishop made a sprawling save on David Pastrnak in the 3-on-3 situation which led to Victor Hedman getting a breakaway but he was held and drew a penalty to give the Bolts a 4-on-3 advantage.

Tampa Bay failed to score on the power play but registered several key chances including Rask making a key save on a Kucherov shot from the slot.

"Yeah I mean we competed hard, we knew the situation coming in that we were missing three important pieces to our team," Stamkos said. "But you cant dwell on that fact."

David Pastrnak opened the scoring eight minutes into the first period when he deflected a Ryan Spooner pass off his skate and past Ben Bishop. The play started when the Lightning gave away a bad turnover near their bench.

Stamkos tied the game late in the first period when he forced a turnover from Zdeno Chara in the Bruins end, dangled around a defender and sniped the shot over Rask’s glove.

Syracuse Crunch captain Mike Angelidis, who was recalled Thursday morning to step into the lineup for the injured Lightning players, played in only his eighth NHL game and his first since 2012.

When tied or leading after two periods, Tampa Bay is now 40-2-5 this season.

Tampa Bay outshot the Bruins 37-30.

The Lightning finish 1-0-1 on the two-game road trip to Montreal and Boston. The Bolts return to Amalie Arena on Saturday to face the Jets in the first of a six-game homestand.
