Tampa Bay 8-2-0; Boston 6-3-1
The Tampa Bay Lightning have lost the first two meetings of the season to the Boston Bruins by a combined score of 8-1, including a shutout from Tuukka Rask at the Tampa Bay Times Forum in their most recent game. The Lightning seek their first regular season win in Boston since March 25, 2010 in their first matinee game of the year today.
The Bolts look to match their road wins total from last season, as they attempt to earn their sixth road victory Monday afternoon. Last year in 24 road contests, Tampa Bay went 6-16-2 in games away from the Times Forum. The Lightning will also try to protect their first place status (24 points) in the Atlantic Division, with the Bruins sitting three points behind (21 points) in the standings.
LIGHTNING – With all the story lines that surrounded Saturday’s game in Detroit, the Lightning pushed it aside and took care of business at Joe Louis Arena in a 3-2 overtime-winner against the Red Wings. Ryan Malone tied the score at one midway through the first period and Steven Stamkos netted the go-ahead goal in the second. Henrik Zetterberg tied the score at two late in the third period, but Teddy Purcell scored his second career overtime goal to defeat Detroit.
The win was their first win at Joe Louis Arena since 1994.
It was a statement game for the Bolts, in which the team’s balance began to shine through again, as each line contributed to the win. Ben Bishop has also been a major factor, recording his fourth consecutive victory, and still allowing more than two goals just twice in 13 games this season.
BRUINS – Winning consecutive home games for the first time since the beginning of the season, Boston faced the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first time since defeating them in the first round of the 2012-13 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Zdeno Chara and Torey Krug scored power-play goals, while Patrice Bergeron netted an even strength tally for the Bruins to defeat Toronto 3-1 Saturday.
Amidst a season-long, five-game homestand in which they have already gone 2-0-1, Boston looks to continue its dominance against division foes, boasting a 7-1-0 record against the Atlantic Division this year.
The Bruins conclude their homestand on Thursday versus the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Steven Stamkos has goals in his last six games and is riding an eight-game point streak in which he has amassed 13 points (nine goals, four assists). The Bolts penalty kill unit has killed-off 37 of their past 39 penalties in 11 games.
10/31 – Recalled Forward Brett Connolly from Syracuse (AHL)
