New-look Lightning get Stamkos back to face Sabres
Buffalo Sabres vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

SABRES (18-35-8) vs. LIGHTNING (34-23-5)

Last 10:

Buffalo 4-5-1; Tampa Bay 3-7-0

TV/Radio:

SUN; AM 970 WFLA

Season Series:

Thursday's contest is the third of four meetings between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Atlantic Division rival, the Buffalo Sabres, during the regular season. The Lightning have walked away with victories in their first two games, both by a 3-2 score, including a two-goal rally late in the third in their last matchup on October 26.

Big Story:

Steven Stamkos will be playing his first game since November 11 after missing 45 games with a broken right tibia. He will be joined by forward Ryan Callahan, who will also be playing in his first game as a Bolt.

Team Scope:

LIGHTNING – In a day that began so good with the return of superstar center Steven Stamkos, things went south quickly as the trade rumors of captain Martin St. Louis came to light soon after. Lightning vice president and general manager, Steve Yzerman honored St. Louis' request to be traded and dealt him to the New York Rangers in exchange for Rangers captain Ryan Callahan and draft picks. It did not take long for the news to settle in as St. Louis skated with his new team, the Blueshirts, at Madison Square Garden the very same night.

Now Tampa Bay moves forward a different team as Callahan brings the beginning of a new era to the Bolts locker room. While only time will tell what product unfolds on the ice for the Lightning, the team can move forward without any distractions while they continue on their playoff push in the Eastern Conference.

SABRES – The first domino fell in Buffalo on Friday when they traded away their keynote player, netminder Ryan Miller, and captain, Steve Ott, to the St. Louis Blues, while getting goaltender Jaroslav Halak and Chris Stewart in return.

Yet as many already had an inkling, that was just the beginning for the Sabres, who waited until deadline day on Wednesday to make the rest of their moves. First claiming former Lightning forward Cory Conacher off waivers, they then dealt Halak to Washington in exchange for Michal Neuvirth and Rostislav Klesla.

Acquiring Matt Moulson for Thomas Vanek earlier in the year, Buffalo decided to part ways with Moulson Wednesday along with Cody McCormick to the Minnesota Wild for Torrey Mitchell. Lastly they traded Brayden McNabb and Jonathan Parker to the Los Angeles Kings for Nicolas Deslauriers and Hudson Fasching.

It is all part of the plan for the Sabres as they prepare to audition the young talent over the last leg of the regular season. All of the deals (excluding Conacher) came with additional draft picks in the next three drafts.

Who's Hot:

Last game Victor Hedman finished with an assist, six blocked shots and three hits. He also has a goal and 13 assists over his past 12 games.

Transactions:

3/5 – Acquired F Ryan Callahan from the NY Rangers along with two draft picks in exchange for F Martin St. Louis

3/5 – Recalled F Richard Panik from Syracuse (AHL); reassigned F Vladislav Namestnikov to Syracuse (AHL)

3/5 – Acquired Jonathan Audy-Marchessault and Dalton Smith from Columbus in exchange for Dana Tyrell and Matt Taormina

Injury Report:

Lightning – D Radko Gudas (lower body, day-to-day), D Brian Lee (knee, out); Sabres – No injuries reported.
