TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- The Montreal Canadiens responded quickly to a disappointing loss.
Yanic Perreault and Stephane Quintal scored 45 seconds apart late in the first period and the Canadiens beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2 Saturday night.
Perreault added an empty-net goal in the third period for the Canadiens, who allowed three third-period goals in dropping a 4-2 decision at Florida on Friday night.
"Last night was a poor effort by everybody, so we wanted to bounce back," said Jose Theodore, who made 35 saves. "We started out really slow the first 10 minutes -- I didn't like what I saw -- but then the guys bounced right back and showed a lot of character."
Niklas Sundstrom and Saku Koivu had the other Montreal goals, and Sheldon Souray had three assists as the Canadiens improved to 6-3-2 in their last 11 games.
"We came in here against a tough Tampa Bay team and salvaged our road trip," Souray said.
Dmitry Afanasenkov and Dave Andreychuk scored for the Lightning, who have lost three straight and are 2-7-2 in the past 11.
"We are not the same team we were at the start of the year right now," Lightning center Tim Taylor said. "When a bad bounce goes the opposite way of us, our heads just seem to go down instead of shake it off. Right now we have to get back to getting upset, a little angry and a lot more desperation. I think that's what we have to do more instead of feeling sorry for ourselves."
Montreal took a 2-1 lead when Perreault and Quintal scored. Perreault netted a power-play goal from the low right circle at 15:00, and Quintal scored his first goal in 22 games from near the blue line at 15:45.
The Canadiens went up 3-1 when Sundstrom scored 10 seconds into the second period. Montreal took a three-goal lead on Koivu's goal at 10:17.
Tampa Bay's John Grahame was then pulled after allowing four goals on 11 shots.
Afanasenkov scored from the left circle during a three-on-one to put the Lightning ahead 1-0 just 59 seconds in. Andreychuk got Tampa Bay within 4-2 at 17:07 of the third.
"I thought the first five or six minutes, we were going to score five the way we came out," Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella said. "You can say that you're playing OK, but we're not winning. We have to get better."
Andreychuk has five goals and six points during a six-game point streak. It was his sixth goal of the season and 619th overall.
The Canadiens are 2-9-1 after trailing 1-0.
"When they score the first goal quickly like that, it sort of puts you on your heels," Montreal coach Claude Julien said. "But the guys were really good at keeping their focus. The second goal probably hurt them (Tampa Bay) more than people think and gave us the momentum that we needed."
