BOSTON (AP) -- Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella benched star forward Vincent Lecavalier to prove a point.
Whether it worked or not remains to be seen, but it certainly sparked some bad blood between the two.
Tortorella wants the Lightning to shoot the puck more, and he hammered that message home by sitting Lecavalier during the second period of Tampa Bay's 1-1 tie Tuesday night with the Boston Bruins.
Andre Roy's first goal of the season 16 seconds into the third tied it for the Lightning. But the bitter feelings between Tortorella and Lecavalier were the main topic in the postgame discussion.
Lecavalier didn't shoot the puck during a three-on-two and was punished for it.
"An awful call," Lecavalier said of Tortorella's decision. "Offensively, I go with my instincts. If I think the play is to make a play, that's what I do. It didn't work out. I'm just going to keep playing hard. If I get benched for it, that's fine."
Tortorella fired back.
"Interesting. It wasn't the proper call?" he said. "Let's forget about the backhanded turnover. Let's talk about trying to play hard.
"He's got to start playing in the team concept. I don't care who he is or who he thinks he is."
The Lightning are just 1-15-6 in Boston.
The Bruins are winless in five games and 1-5-4-1 in their last 11.
"We've tied enough games," Boston defenseman Nick Boynton said. "Overtime definitely kills you."
Rob Zamuner gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 4:18 of the second period with his second goal of the season. He stuck a rebound of a shot by P.J. Axelsson past Nikolai Khabibulin on the stick side. Axelsson's assist was the 100th of his NHL career.
The Bruins are winless in eight home games, dating to Nov. 20 against Washington. It's Boston's longest home winless string since a nine-game slide (0-4-4-1) from Dec. 21, 1999-Jan. 4, 2000.
"It's a demanding business, a mental grind as much as a physical grind," Boston coach Mike Sullivan said. "We need to re-energize ourselves and head in the right direction."
Khabibulin (10-8-4) stopped 21 shots.
Tampa Bay is 2-1-5 in overtime games this season but has won only once in seven games.
Andrew Raycroft (9-8-5) made 31 saves for Boston.
Both teams were 0-for-1 on the power play.
