WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Washington Capitals gave Tampa Bay a gift the Lightning took full advantage of Monday night.
Tampa Bay took the lead in the third period with two goals on a five-minute power play. Martin St. Louis sparked the Lightning's four-goal final period with a goal and two assists as the Lightning rallied for a 6-3 victory over the Washington Capitals.
The Lightning was on the extended power play after Washington's Rick Berry drew a five-minute penalty for spearing Martin Cibak _ plus a game misconduct _ with 17:12 left and the Capitals ahead 3-2. Fredrik Modin and Dave Andreychuk then scored power-play goals 73 seconds apart to give Tampa Bay a 4-3 lead.
``The team took advantage, and you have to give them credit for that,'' Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella said. ``That changed the complexion.''
The two quick goals seemed to deflate Washington, and Tampa Bay held a 14-2 advantage in shots in the period.
``Down a goal, we get a power play, we have to capitalize,'' said St. Louis, who finished with a goal and three assists. ``In five minutes, there's no reason we shouldn't at least get one, and getting two is big.''
A dejected Berry insisted he wasn't trying to hurt Cibak.
``I never intended to spear anybody,'' Berry said. ``It just feels bad that you let the guys down.''
Modin tied the game by redirecting Darryl Sydor's shot past goalie Olaf Kolzig from the slot. St. Louis had the other assist. Andreychuk gave the Lightning the lead by tipping St. Louis' one-timer past a screened Kolzig for Tampa Bay's third power-play goal.
St. Louis and Ruslan Fedotenko added goals later in the period. Vincent Lecavalier also had a goal and two assists. Sydor, Modin, Fedotenko and Andreychuk all finished with a goal and an assist for Tampa Bay, 16-2-1-4 since Jan. 8.
``Rick feels bad, but he is the epitome of a team player,'' Washington coach Glen Hanlon said. ``He's not happy, but you don't want to throw away all the good things he's done.''
Sydor scored on Tampa Bay's first shot just 56 seconds into the game. Washington tied it on Josef Boumedienne's first goal of the season, on a power play. Lecavalier connected later in the first period and Washington's Brian Willsie scored in the second period.
Anson Carter gave the Capitals their 3-2 lead two minutes into the final period.
Also, Ted Leonsis hosted Jason Hammer in his private suite at the game. Hammer is the fan who scuffled with the Washington owner following a game last month.
