TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The struggling Atlanta Thrashers showed they can be an offensive force.
Jaroslav Modry scored two of Atlanta's four power-play goals, leading the Thrashers over the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-4 Tuesday night.
Atlanta converted on all its man-advantage opportunities against the NHL's top penalty-killing unit. The Lightning had allowed only three goals in 62 short-handed situations.
``Our hard work finally is paying off,'' Atlanta's Marian Hossa said.
The Thrashers took their first lead at 4-3 when Hossa skated in from the right wing boards and lifted a shot over goalie John Grahame at 3:03 of the third period. Modry gave Atlanta a two-goal lead on a power-play goal with 7:01 left.
Atlanta snapped a three-game losing streak in winning for the fourth time in 12 games this year.
``We played exceptional in their end,'' said goalie Steve Shields, who made 29 saves. ``The power play came through and they made the difference in the game for us.''
The Lightning got to 5-4 on Vinny Prospal's goal at 15:08 of the third, but Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk finished the scoring with an empty-netter with 17 seconds left. He also had three assists, giving him eight assists and 12 points during a five-game point streak.
Atlanta got a goal and two assists from Peter Bondra, increasing his career totals to 41 goals and 57 points in 55 games against Tampa Bay.
Brad Richards had two goals for the Lightning. The defending Stanley Cup champions outscored Atlanta 9-2 in two earlier wins.
``There's no excuses,'' Tampa Bay defenseman Pavel Kubina said. ``We knew exactly what they were going to do, and still they scored four (power-play) goals. You can't win games like that.''
Atlanta scored two power-play goals in two chances and gave up a short-handed score as the teams ended the first period tied at 2.
Richards put the Lightning up 1-0 at 4:43. The Thrashers tied it on Modry's power-play goal at 11:09.
Richards regained the lead for Tampa Bay with a short-handed score with 2:37 left, before Atlanta tied it again on Bondra's power-play goal 40 seconds later.
The second period started in similar fashion. Vincent Lecavalier gave Tampa Bay its third lead at 4:37 before the Thrashers got their third power-play goal by Slava Kozlov at 8:59.
