TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Ed Belfour will have to wait a little longer to move past Terry Sawchuk in the record book.
Belfour came up short in his first bid to break a tie for second place on the NHL career victory list as Pavel Kubina scored a tiebreaking power-play goal with 8:38 left in the Tampa Bay Lightning's 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night.
Belfour tied Terry Sawchuk with his 447th win on Monday in a 2-1 victory at Florida. Patrick Roy tops the victory list with 551.
"It just wasn't meant to be tonight," Belfour said. "I thought we worked hard. Just keep working hard and it will eventually happen."
Kubina, who hadn't score a goal in his previous 29 games, beat Belfour on a shot from the right circle. Belfour finished with 22 saves.
"I didn't even know how to feel scoring a goal ... I didn't know what to do after the goal," Kubina joked. "It feels great. It's only one. Hopefully I'll get a lot more goals for this team."
Belfour said never saw Kubina's shot, which went past several players.
"I don't even know where it went," Belfour said. "It was a real good game. Real competitive, back and forth. We were just a little bit short."
Martin St. Louis also scored for Tampa Bay, which has won seven of nine. John Grahame stopped 20 shots to win his sixth straight decision.
"We have been rolling along as a team," Grahame said. "That is what we had here tonight."
Toronto, which is 7-3-1 in its last 11 games, got a goal from Nik Antropov.
Antropov put the Maple Leafs up 1-0 from the slot during a 3-on-1 at 1:52 of the first. Toronto, the NHL's top road power play and second best overall, recorded just two shots during a 1 minute, 25 second two-man advantage that started less than two minutes after Antropov's goal.
"I think that's the biggest part of the game," Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella said. "I really felt our bench was given a lift. You know that comes back and bites you ... not scoring a goal when it's 5-on-3."
Toronto was 0-for-5 on the power play. The Lightning converted one of six opportunities.
Belfour made a nice save on St. Louis' wraparound with nine minutes left in the first.
St. Louis tied it at 1 on a breakaway goal 73 seconds into the second. Belfour got his body on the shot, but the puck flipped over the goalies' shoulder and hit his back before trickling into the net.
"Ed was fine," Maple Leafs coach Pat Quinn said. "He made some good stops for us. In the third period, when we needed to have some guys playing, we didn't get the guys playing very well. Your goaltender can keep teams off the board for so long."
Belfour slid to near the top of the right circle to keep Vincent Lecavalier from the puck and potential breakaway with 15 1-2 minutes to play. Lecavalier, who had two assists, has one goal in his last 12 games.
Notes: Belfour is 15-6-3 all-time against Tampa Bay. ... The Lightning signed associate coach Craig Ramsay, assistant coach Jeff Reese, video coach Nigel Kirwan and conditioning coach Eric Lawson to three-year extensions. Tortorella received a three-year extension last July. ... Toronto C Mats Sundin played in his 1,100 NHL game. He has 1,101 points. ... Lightning C Brad Richards had his 10-game point streak end. He had four goals and 12 points during the stretch. ... Tampa Bay LW Fredrik Modin left the game with back spasms.
