TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Patrice Bergeron took advantage of a breakaway attempt to make Hannu Toivonen's effort stand up.
Bergeron scored a tiebreaking, short-handed goal with 11:49 left and Hannu Toivonen made 31 saves to help the Boston Bruins beat the Lightning 2-1 Friday night.
Bergeron made several stickhandling moves before beating Sean Burke. Glen Murray assisted.
``You want to make the most of those opportunities,'' Bergeron said. ``I got a great pass and got Burke sliding.''
Burke had 22 saves. He started in place of John Grahame, who lost for the fifth time in six starts when the Lightning were beaten 4-3 by Montreal on Wednesday.
``He didn't have a whole lot of work, but he was solid,'' Lightning coach John Tortorella said. ``He gave us a chance.''
Wayne Primeau also scored for the Bruins, who have won three of five.
Rob DiMaio scored for Tampa Bay, which has lost six of seven.
``It's very important we keep our edge about ourselves as we fight through this,'' Tortorella said. ``There's a lot of hockey to be played. We can't look at the standings. We need to work each and every day and just try to find a way to get points.''
Tampa Bay went 0-for-5 on the power play, and has converted just two of its past 30 chances.
``I think we have to clean up the little things ... the little things that made us a real good team,'' Lightning center Tim Taylor said. ``That's winning all the loose-puck battles. Killing that big penalty. Scoring the big goal on the power play. We've lost a little bit of that. We're playing well, but not well enough.''
Primeau put the Bruins up 1-0 at 1:10 of the second. DiMaio scored on a rebound to tie it at 7:27.
``I think there was a sense of urgency out there for both teams,'' Boston coach Mike Sullivan said. ``We were both looking for a spark.''
Burke kept it a one-goal game with a save on Brad Isbister during a 2-on-1 with six minutes to play.
``The bottom line is we lost another hockey game,'' Burke said. We've got to find a way to stop that slide. I think it's frustrating anytime you lose. Right now maybe it's not even as important how we're losing or how we win. It's finding a way to win.''
Notes: Lightning captain Dave Andreychuk played in his 1,635th game, tying him with Scott Stevens for fourth place on the career list. ... Bruins LW Sergei Samsonov returned after missing one game with a rib injury. ... Tampa Bay reassigned LW Chris Dingman to Springfield of the AHL. ... Bergeron has one goal and six points during a five-game point streak. ... D Andy Rogers, Tampa Bay's first-round pick in the 2004 draft, will require surgery after doctors determined his left ankle has chronic instability and ligament damage.
