PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Johan Holmqvist waited a long time for his first NHL win, making it an even sweeter experience Thursday night.
Martin St. Louis scored two goals, Holmqvist stopped 30 shots and the Lightning beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 to snap a three-game losing streak.
Holmqvist was signed as a free agent by the Lightning on July 1. The 28-year-old Swede came into the game winless in five career decisions, two this year and the other three with the New York Rangers over parts of three seasons.
"This is a special feeling," he said. "I've put a lot of pressure on myself to stay calm. I tried to keep myself sharp and get ready for my next shot."
Tim Taylor, Vincent Lecavalier, and Eric Perrin also scored for the Lightning, who have beaten the Flyers 10 straight times.
R.J. Umberger and Randy Jones scored for Philadelphia (3-8-1), which scored a pair of goals within 21 seconds in the third period.
Holmqvist had some spectacular saves, including stops on point-blank shots by Simon Gagne and Sami Kapanen in the first period. He also denied Peter Forsberg's redirection attempt late in the second.
Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella sensed that Holmqvist was anxious to do well.
"He's been chomping on the bit to get in there for his starts," Tortorella said. "He played very well. He made some key saves at key times."
St. Louis flipped the puck in from the slot to put Tampa Bay ahead at 10:39 of the first period after Lecavalier split two defenders with a pass from inside the blue line. St. Louis added his second goal in the second to make it 2-0.
Taylor scored on a scramble with 1:50 left in the second period, triggering a cascade of boos from the restless Philadelphia fans.
Umberger spoiled Holmqvist's shutout bid at 11:20 of the third period, beating the goalie to the stick side. Jones' goal came at 11:41 when his shot bounced off Tampa Bay defenseman Paul Ranger.
"It's unacceptable to take until the third period to start playing well like we should," Umberger said. "We had some scoring chances. We couldn't get that one bounce. It's almost top the point where's there some frustration setting in."
Forsberg was assessed a double minor for high-sticking and unsportsmanlike conduct, plus a 10-minute misconduct, at 15:50.
Lecavalier and Perrin scored empty net goals in the last 2 minutes.
"We come out here and we play flat to start the hockey game," Flyers coach John Stevens said. "We finally showed some emotion in the third period. Quite frankly, it's about time."
