Stamkos Gets 12th Goal in Hard-Fought Loss

The Lightning were a long way from the comforts of home and the St. Pete Times Forum when they met the Canucks in Vancouver tonight, but they made themselves at home at GM Place and only came up short by one goal as they dropped a hard fought battle by the score of 2-1.

Vancouver jumped out to the lead when Vancouver defenseman Alexander Edler got his seventh goal of the season while the Canucks skated with the man advantage with Tampa Bay defenseman Josef Melichar in the penalty box for cross checking. The goal came at 11:41 of period one and was the only goal of the stanza.

Tampa Bay had several good scoring opportunities in the period, but Vancouver netminder Roberto Luongo stopped all nine of the Lightning’s shot on net, including a great scoring chance by Steven Stamkos with just over three minutes in the period.

The second period started slowly, with neither team recording a shot on net for the first 5:30 of the stanza. Stamkos again produced an outstanding scoring chance that Luongo proved the equal to.

Finally, after being robbed several times, Stamkos broke through with the tying goal when he took a pass from Martin St. Louis while stationed on the back door of the Vancouver crease and pushed the puck past Loungo. The goal was number 12 for Stamkos on the season and his second in consecutive games. Mark Recchi also was credited with an assist.

The second period was a very good one for the Lightning; the Bolts stifled the Canuck attack, and when Vancouver did penetrate the Lightning zone, Karri Ramo, in the Tampa Bay net, made impressive save after save.

Tampa Bay finished the period with an 8-6 shot advantage over the Canucks and entered the final 20:00 minutes tied with Vancouver, 1-1.

The third period proved a different matter, however, as Tampa Bay could only generate one shot on the Canuck net through the first 13 minutes of the final period.

Meanwhile, Vancouver pulled into the lead when Vancouver forward Steve Bernier was able to sneak the puck past Ramo, via a deflection off a Lightning skate, at 9:26.

The mountain Tampa Bay needed to climb to even the score got higher when defenseman Cory Murphy was called for tripping with just over six minutes remaining to be played. Although the Canucks could not capitalize on the extra man opportunity, the power play killed off two valuable minutes which the Lightning could have used to mount an attack to tie the game.

The Lightning penalty killers held Vancouver’s power play to just one goal on five extra man chances and Ramo made 23 saves on 25 Canuck shots, but what Tampa couldn’t do was produce the score that would tie the game.

Throughout the third stanza, the Lightning were able to manage only four shots on net and Loungo handled each of those with ease.

Tampa Bay finished with 21 shots on net, with Steven Stamkos leading the way with four.

Following tonight’s lost, Tampa Bay continues with their road swing and moves on to face the Calgary Flames on Sunday before returning to Tampa to meet the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.
