In the days during Training Camp leading up to the 2010 preseason opener, Lightning Head Coach Guy Boucher repeatedly stated that he wanted to see a relentless effort from his team.
Tampa Bay granted the coach’s wish, outshining the Stars by exploding for four goals in a 4-2 win that earned Boucher his first NHL victory, albeit in preseason.
“Guy brings a lot of energy to the game. He’s always upbeat and it’s exciting for everyone,” Lightning center James Wright said. “With the changes that have gone on here, I think it’s going to be a good year for all of us.”
“Everyone was going all out tonight and crashing the net,” Hall said. “From top to bottom, everyone did a great job and it was a lot of fun to see all the guys enjoy some success. This new system is a lot of fun to play in.”
Net minder Dan Ellis, making his Lightning debut, stopped 17 of 19 shots, while giving up a pair of goals to Aaron Gagnon and Philip Larsen.
Tampa Bay struck first when Hall opened scoring at 4:44 of the opening period after putting in a rebound off an initial shot by Dana Tyrell.
Moore doubled the lead just seven and a half minutes into the middle frame, cleaning up after teammate Ryan Malone in front of the net and wristing one past Raycroft for a two-goal advantage.
Raycroft yielded goaltending duties to backup Brent Krahn midway through the second period after making 16 saves on 18 total shots. Tampa Bay wasted little time in testing the new net minder, as Tyrell nearly made it 3-0 after skating along the right boards, but his wrist shot deflected off of the bottom of the crossbar to keep the Lightning lead at two.
Gagnon cut the deficit in half early in the third period after lifting a backhand over the stick of Ellis. Hall tallied his second of the night just 2:20 later to regain the two-goal lead, but Larsen found the back of the net at 7:17 to make it 3-2.
“We expected it was going to be a hard fought game. Both teams were just feeling each other out,” Wright added.
Ohlund beat Krahn at 10:55 to put Tampa Bay back up by a pair, ending a year-long goal-scoring drought after failing to find the back of the net last season for the first time in his long-tenured NHL career. The tally marked the defenseman’s first goal as a member of the Lightning.
“There were a lot of positive things,” Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman said. “They obviously competed very hard, and it showed. The players are really making a conscientious effort to apply what they’ve been working on at training camp.”
