Guy Boucher’s new system appears to be paying early dividends for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Boucher’s scheme, which favors defensemen up front in the attacking zone, proved its effectiveness on Friday night as Mike Lundin helped defeat the in-state rival Panthers 2-1 in overtime at the BankAtlantic Center.
Lundin recorded the game-winner at 3:21 in the extra period after taking a pass from Martin St. Louis, as he sent a shot past Florida goaltender Tomas Vokoun.
Simon Gagne also had a goal for Tampa Bay, which improved to 3-1-1 in the preseason.
Lightning goaltender Mike Smith, appearing in his first action since the conclusion of the regular season in April, stopped 29 of 30 shots despite missing the majority of the preseason with a fractured finger tip.
“I felt pretty good the entire game,” Smith said. “I got a little bit fatigued as we went along, but I did a good job of getting square to the puck and was able to get good positioning.”
Smith was sharp despite missing playing time. He allowed the Panthers’ only goal to Jason Garrison at 14:35 in the third period, but was otherwise perfect, holding Florida scoreless for nearly 55 minutes to open the contest.
“It feels good to get a win, even in preseason,” Smith added. “I think it really boosts confidence in your game. Down the road, that’s a big asset to have.”
Gagne broke a scoreless deadlock at 8:23 in the second period as he finished off a 2-on-1 breakaway with Vincent Lecavalier to make it 1-0. The goal marked the Lightning winger’s third goal and fifth point of the preseason. Gagne later added an assist to bring his preseason total to a team-leading six points.
Tampa Bay registered a preseason single-game high 42 shots on goal and outshot the Panthers 29-15 through the first two periods alone.
The win improved the Lightning’s record to 12-3-3 since the start of the 2008 preseason. Florida, meanwhile, lost its second straight and moved its preseason mark to 3-1-1.
