In a contest between Flyers goaltender Brian Boucher and the man on the opposing bench who shares his last name, score one for the head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Guy Boucher, hired as the team's seventh head coach June 10, led Tampa Bay to its third consecutive victory on Thursday night against Philadelphia, a 3-2 win that moved the Lightning to 3-0-0 for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
The victory was equally as special for Boucher as it was for several of his players including Steven Stamkos, Pavel Kubina, Dan Ellis and Simon Gagne, who returned to Philadelphia in a Lightning jersey after opening the first 10 seasons of his career with the Flyers.
Stamkos, who through three games this season appears to be on the fast track to another successful season after leading the league with 51 goals in 2009-10, became the first player in franchise history to score a goal in each of the team’s first three games to start a season when he opened scoring at 15:11 in the first after taking a centering pass from Steve Downie in the low slot.
Martin St. Louis created the scoring chance when fired a shot from the blue line wide of the net, allowing Downie to corralle the puck along the boards before finding Stamkos in front of the net.
Kubina and Dominic Moore also had goals for the Lightning, who earned their first win against the Flyers since defeating the reigning Eastern Conference champs in a 4-1 victory at the St. Pete Times Forum on Jan. 15, 2009.
Kubina’s goal at 1:27 to open the final period, his 66th in a Lightning sweater, tied him with Dan Boyle on the franchise’s all-time list for most goals by a defenseman.
Nikolay Zherdev and Danny Briere had both of Philadelphia’s goals come against Dan Ellis, who in his Lightning debut earned his first win in a Tampa Bay sweater after turning back 24 of 26 shots.
Philadelphia rallied from an early one-goal deficit to climb back in the contest prior to the first horn.
Zherdev knotted the score at one, beating Ellis glove-side after taking a pass across the slot from James van Riemsdyk at 17:03 in the opening period.
