  • Steven Stamkos' second period tally brings his NHL-leading goal scoring total to 27
  • Phil Kessel's third period power play goal was his 150th NHL career goal
  • The Leafs managed to kill four early Bolts power plays - including a two-man advantage

  • Martin St. Louis extended his point streak to six games since returning from injury on Dec. 21
  • Lecavalier has now notched points in four of his past five games and in six of his past nine outings
  • Toronto's Joffrey Lupul extended his point streak against the Lightning to seven games

A resilient effort from the Tampa Bay Lightning was not enough to overcome the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night.

Steven Stamkos and Pavel Kubina each had goals for the Lightning, which twice erased a pair of one-goal deficits, but fell short in helping the Bolts extend their winning streak to a season-high four games following a 7-3 loss to Toronto at the Air Canada Centre.

The loss halted the Lightning’s win streak at three games, while Darryl Boyce notched the game-winner and Joffrey Lupul added a goal and three assists for the Maple Leafs, which earned a victory for the first time in their past four tries.

Vincent Lecavalier had the other goal for Tampa Bay, which has now been outscored 14-4 in two matches this season against Toronto.

Two consecutive power-play goals in the third period by Dion Phaneuf and Phil Kessel capped the offense in a game in which the bulk of the scoring came in a span of 1:48 in the second period that resulted in four goals being exchanged between the clubs.

Stamkos’ league-leading 27th of the season tied the game at two at 11:55 of the second period, just 33 seconds before Mikhail Grabovski regained Toronto’s one-goal lead by taking a pass from Lupul to beat Mathieu Garon into the top corner.

Stamkos now has 11 goals and three assists over his past nine games. Garon made 17 saves on 21 shots, but was relieved by Dwayne Roloson in the final minutes of the middle frame.

Kubina drew Tampa Bay even a second time, netting the equalizer with a slap shot from the top of the right circle, but a costly turnover at the Maple Leafs’ blue line gave Toronto an additional scoring chance.

Boyce took a pass from Matt Frattin for what would stand up as the game-winner, giving Toronto a 4-3 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the frame.

The scoring in the second period didn’t stop there, however, as Frattin extended the advantage to two goals heading into the final 20 minutes with his fifth of the season at 19:22. He buried a rebound attempt from Nazem Kadri’s wraparound try, which was initially kicked out by Roloson’s right pad.

“We gave them a little too much,” Lecavalier said. “We got some good opportunities, but we needed to play tighter defensively for sure.”

Lecavalier grabbed Tampa Bay a quick lead just 57 seconds in after flipping a wrist shot past Gustavsson that put the Lightning up 1-0.

Lupul tied it 2:27 later, and Carl Gunnarsson’s second of the season made it 2-1 after beating Garon with a slap shot from the blue line at 8:46.

“I thought Vinny’s line was playing outstanding,” Lightning head coach Guy Boucher said. We needed more lines to step it up like they were doing. They gave us a good start. It’s too bad we let go of that gap for [Toronto’s] first goal and gave them wings, and we missed out on the puck a few times on the power play, so that didn’t pay off for us.”

As the first period expired, Tampa Bay had a chance to send a tied game into the second, but failed to convert on two power-play chances, including a 5-on-3, to head into the intermission down one.

Nevertheless, Toronto’s 30th-ranked penalty kill unit was put to the test more than once on the night, but went on to kill all five opposing chances with the man advantage.
