NOTEWORTHY

  • The Lightning/Bruins season series finished with the home team winning all four games.
  • Steven Stamkos’ two goals give him 55 this season, moving him past Joe Sakic (54/2000-01) for the second highest goal-scoring season for an NHL center in 16 years. Mario Lemieux owns the highest goal-scoring season for an NHL center during that stretch of years, scoring 69 goals in 1995-96.
  • Stamkos’ two-goal effort was his second straight two-goal game against the Bruins, he now has 12 multi-goal games this season.
  • Stamkos’ six faceoff wins give him 510 this season, moving him past Vincent Lecavalier (505) for the most faceoff wins on the team.
  • Martin St. Louis’ two assists give him multi-point efforts in three straight games. He now has 19 multi-point games this season.
  • Victor Hedman’s assist gives him two in his last three games.
  • Hedman led the Lightning with three blocked shots.
  • Teddy Purcell played 19:49 and led Tampa Bay with four shots on goal.
  • Dwayne Roloson had his season-best (tie) three-game win streak snapped.

In all situations, win or lose, Steven Stamkos just can’t help adding to his league-leading goal total.

Stamkos scored twice more Tuesday night, including once at even strength and an additional time on the power play, but in a 5-2 loss as the Tampa Bay Lightning fell to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.

Dwayne Roloson, making his fourth consecutive start, stopped 33 of 37 shots for the Lightning, which saw a three-game win streak come to a halt. Martin St. Louis added two assists.

Boston, meanwhile, won for the third consecutive time. The win streak is the Bruins’ longest since stringing together seven straight victories from Dec. 10-28.

Brad Marchand, Benoit Pouliot and Rich Peverley each had third-period goals for the Bruins, which outshot Tampa Bay 38-17 through 60 minutes.

Pouliot broke a 2-2 tie and fired the game-winning goal past Roloson with 11:34 gone in the final frame after Brian Rolston protected the puck behind the net and found his teammate open in the slot.

Marchand added the Bruins' insurance goal at the 15:50 mark of the third period, while Peverley’s 10th of the season into an empty net sealed the contest with just seven seconds to go in regulation. Tim Thomas made 16 saves.

Tampa Bay found itself down 2-1 with nearly six minutes gone in the third, but Stamkos’ second of the night, this time on the power play, drew Tampa Bay even with still more than half the period to play. After Johnny Boychuk was sent off for tripping, Stamkos one-timed a feed from the right circle after taking a pass from Victor Hedman and beat Thomas to the top left corner.

Stamkos now has five goals in his past three games. The Lightning forward’s 55 goals on the season pulled him nine ahead of Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin in the highly-contested Rocket Richard Trophy race.

He also had a goal just 5:03 into the first, which opened the scoring and grabbed the Lightning a quick 1-0 lead.

Thornton tied it 5:51 later though after picking up a rebound in front of the net and slipping it past Roloson for his fifth of the year.

After holding the Bruins’ attack off to take a 1-1 tie heading into the first intermission, the Lightning seemed to fall behind, as it registered a shot on goal 34 seconds into the middle frame, but failed to get the next one until after 14 minutes had expired in the period.

Boston outshot Tampa Bay 12-3 in the second, with Seidenberg putting the Bruins up 2-1 before the second horn had sounded signaling the end of 40 minutes.

Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, playing in his 1,000th career NHL game, set up three of his team’s goals on the night to record the third three-assist game of his career.

Rolston, meanwhile, now has points in seven straight.
