The Tampa Bay Lightning not only received a point in the standings on Tuesday night, they earned it.
After being down 3-1 in the third period, Steven Stamkos notched the game-tying goal at 11:17 of the final frame to send the contest into overtime, before eventually falling to the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 in a shootout at the MTS Centre.
Pierre-Cedric Labrie also scored a third-period goal for Tampa Bay, while Martin St. Louis had the other tally for the Lightning.
The defeat was Tampa Bay’s fourth straight. The Bolts have now lost six of their past seven.
Ben Bishop made 33 saves.
Winnipeg won its fourth straight game, behind a pair of regulation goals from Andrew Ladd and an additional tally from Blake Wheeler.
Mike Santorelli recorded the game-winner in the skills competition, beating Bishop through the five hole.
The victory was significant for the Jets, as the team is now tied with the New York Rangers for the eighth and final playoff spot with 46 points each.
The Jets got off to a fast start, wasting no time to mark the scoreboard just moments following the opening puck drop.
Ladd opened the scoring just 1:22 into the opening frame when he beat Bishop through the legs
with a quick wrist shot for a 1-0 lead.
St. Louis then tied it at the midway point of the first, firing a shot from the left circle and beating Ondrej Pavelec to the short side to pull Tampa Bay even at 1-1.
“I made the best of a good bounce,” St. Louis said. “They put it on the tee for me, and it was in my wheelhouse, so I put my head down and put it in a tough spot.”
Tampa Bay continued to have its quality chances throughout the remainder of the first, perhaps none better than Vincent Lecavalier’s in the waning minutes, but Pavelec stood tall to deny the Bolts captain and keep the game tied.
Then, early in the second, Dana Tyrell nearly cashed in on another excellent chance, but his wrist shot rang the post to keep the score even.
Pavelec finished the night by turning back 24 of 27 shots faced.
At the other end, Wheeler made his chance count at 8:37 when he skated through the slot and dangled around a few defenders before pulling Bishop out wide and sending a shot high into the corner of the net for a 2-1 lead.
Ladd appeared to make it 3-1 moments later, but the goal was waved off by officials to keep the Jets up by just a single goal.
Winnipeg would get the goal back, however, with just over two minutes remaining in the middle frame, as Ladd’s second of the night deflected off the stick of Keith Aulie and changed directions past Bishop while on the power play.
The Lightning came to within one at 5:19 of the third after Labrie collected a rebound out in front and sent it past Pavelec to trim the deficit to 3-2.
Stamkos tied it nearly six minutes later, beating Pavelec with a wrister to knot things 3-3.
